A tall, dark figure appeared before their eyes, wrapped in shadows. Zaiper's stomach churned.

Zaiper took off running.
Azrael didn't chase him.
Zaiper sprinted toward the wooded path, his heart pounding, his feet thumping harder with each step. Further ahead, Yaz appeared from behind a tree, sword drawn. Zaiper swerved sharply, cursing, and veered in the opposite direction. He ran blindly, but he knew this forest like the back of his hand. He had grown up in it.
Damn vampire. He'd led him straight into the slaughter. He should never have ctonight, not in his weakened state, not under a moon eclipse that drained his power. But he only needed to stay hidden until morning. Then, he would find a way to recover and rise again.
He reached one of his old hideouts, a small ledge in the woods, a hollow concealed by roots and stones. It was familiar and safe.
But the hairs on his arms stood on end. His beast stirred, fearful. He felt like prey.

Zaiper went rigid. “Who the hell is there?!" he barked, raising his voice. “I'm an Alpha! How dare you hunt me?!" He bared his fangs. "Cout! Facenow!" Nothing. Just wind and birds. The whisper of the trees.
