Chapter 544: It Had All Started Out So Carefully...
Who am I? The thought hit her hard, almost as if it were foreign to her, a question she had never asked herself before.
She did not know. She had no idea.
The voices and the echoes of the celebration around her faded into the background, and all that remained was the silence of her own confusion. She did not even realize she was heading toward a place where no one would find her. Her mind was too full, too lost.
Nnenna reached the forest, unaware that Arthur was trailing behind her, his footsteps quieter than she realized.
The cool air of the woods brushed past her, but her mind was still tangled in the fragments of memories she could not fully understand. She needed to be alone, to think, but even here, it felt like something, someone, was following her.
"Nnenna," Arthur's voice called out, calm as ever, but with an unusual edge to it. The coldness of his tone, something Nnenna had cto recognize as his normal, was tinged with something more urgent now. Something off.
The sound of his voice pulled her out of her spiral. She turned, finding him standing there, just a few paces away. At first, she didn't even recognize him, not fully. He was standing there, his usual neat appearance in disarray. His white shirt was wrinkled, the sleeves rolled up messily, his hair even more tousled than usual.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtThere was a crease between his brows, something Nnenna had never really seen on his face before. He was always so composed, so sure of himself. But now... the lines of exhaustion, frustration, and confusion etched on his face made him seem almost vulnerable.
He was... different.
He looked almost out of place, his usual composure faltering as his gaze locked with hers, sharp and searching. Nnenna blinked at him, the questions piling up in her mind, but his eyes seemed to hold something deeper.
The typical coldness in his expression was now softened, overshadowed by something else, something raw. Arthur stepped toward her slowly, his footsteps deliberate but hesitant, as though he were trying to find the right words, to figure out how to approach her, or even if he should.
"How do you know that move?" His voice was quiet, but the force behind it couldn't be missed. His usual calmness was gone, replaced by the sharpness of a man driven by a need for answers.
Nnenna's breath hitched. That was the squestion she had been planning on asking him, wasn't it? She could feel the pulse of her confusion, the sense of déjà vu pressing in on her chest.
The memory of the moment when she had used that move, the stunned look on his face at the training ground, flashed through her mind.
She had never seen him look like that before. Now, here he was, asking her the exact sthing she was about to ask him.
Her mind felt like it was going in circles. She opened her mouth to respond, but the words didn't come. "I... I don't know," she said, but the uncertainty in her voice barely felt like her own.
It was as though she was searching for something inside her, something that had been lost.
Before she could say anything more, the sound of footsteps broke the tension. Somto emerged from the trees, his face marked by confusion. His eyes darted between Nnenna and Arthur, his expression puzzled.
"What are you two doing?" Somto asked, trying to sound calm, but there was an undercurrent of unease in his voice.
Seeing Somto there, Nnenna felt a sudden wave of helplessness. The questions swirling in her mind, the confusion, the fear, it all crashed down on her. She took a shaky step toward him, her eyes stinging with the threat of tears.
"Who am I, Somto?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, as though asking the question out loud might make the answers crushing in.
But deep down, she knew he wouldn't have the answers. Not the answers that would quiet the storm in her mind. Not the kind of answers that would make sense of what was happening to her.
How could he possibly know? Somto's heart twisted at the sight of her, the way her eyes seemed so lost, so vulnerable. She had never looked like this before.
He had never seen her this fragile. was as if everything she thought she knew about herself had capart at the seams. And it hurt him more than he could put into words.
"Silly girl," he said softly, his voice gentle as he stepped closer, hishands moving instinctively to smooth down her disheveled hair, to fix what had been torn apart inside her.
"You're Nnenna. That's who you are." But even as he said it, he saw the doubt in her eyes, the weight of confusion still hanging in the air between them. She didn't believe him, not fully.
"Am I?" Nnenna asked again, her voice trembling as she placed her hand over his, stilling in place. She wasn't pushing him away, but pulling him closer. Holding onto him like he could be the one to give her the answers. Somto's heart ached. He couldn't lie to her. But he couldn't tell her the full truth either. Not yet. Not when everything was still so dangerous, so precarious.
His hand faltered, hovering over her hair for a moment before he slowly pulled it away.
it away. He couldn't fook her in the eye as he spoke, his voice quiet but firm. "You're Nnenna Achebe...
that's who you are..." Her gaze never wavered from his, but the tension in the air was thick with unspoken words.
He knew she needed more. She needed to understand, to make sense of what was happening to her. But he couldn't give her the answers she wanted, at least not now.
The plan had to cfirst.
