Chapter 1112: "By the way," Alan tried again, tossing out a lifeline. "Have you picked a date to pop the question? Need a hand?" "Not yet." Ellis's answer was vague but thoughtful. "Once the rings are ready, I'll talk to her friends, pick a day, and plan a surprise she won't see coming." "I get it..." Alan muttered, lost in thought. Why wasn't Ellis curious? Wasn't he supposed to be sharp as a tack? Ellis glanced at him, his face calm but focused. "Something eating at you?" "Nah." Alan's denial ctoo fast, like a reflex.
His mind was racing. He'd been so obvious—shouldn't Ellis at least ask what was up? But he'd misjudged. Outside of Freya, Ellis didn't meddle in other people's business. If Alan wasn't ready to talk, he wouldn't push. That was just his way.
So they kept eating, the clink of cutlery filling the silence.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtEllis's thoughts wandered to Freya. Should he call her first or just show up? Alan, meanwhile, was stuck on one thought: Ellis was stubborn as an ox.
After dinner, they parted ways.
Alan tried one last hint as they left, but Ellis didn't bite.
"If you don't want to say it, don't," Ellis said with a shrug. "Not everything needs to be laid bare." Frustrated, Alan climbed into his car and sped off.
Back at the hotel, he was about to head up to Freya's suite to spill the beans when he spotted Ellis standing outside her door, hand raised to knock.
gov.☐☐☐☐☐☐ He whipped out his phone and fired off a quick text to Freya.
Then he strolled over, casual as ever. "Ellis? Why are you here?" "I cto see Freya," Ellis said simply. Right then, Freya opened the door.
Seeing both men, she stepped aside with a smile. "Con in." "Work done?" Ellis asked. He'd given her a heads-up about his visit, so she wasn't caught off guard.
"Not quite," Freya said, slipping into her role flawlessly as she led them to the suite's living room. "I'm still sorting spapers Melvin dropped off. He's got a big meeting tomorrow, and I'm helping him prep." Ellis and Alan glanced at the documents spread out on the table.
Alan's mind reeled. Hadn't she said this trip wasn't about work? The files looked legit—too legit to be a cover story.
"Make yourselves comfortable.
Drinks are over there," Freya said not staying in character, not giving Ellis a hint of her real plans. "I've got to wrap this up first." Alan shot a quick look at Ellis.
Ellis, sensing her act but not calling her out, grabbed two glassesofm water and settled onto the sofa, content to wait until she was ready.
