He took the phone, curiosity bubbling beneath his usual grin. Because of the vague contact name, he didn’t
realize who was on the other end.
Lawrence lowered his voice. “Hello?”
“Who are you?” Melvin’s voice was sharp, suspicion blooming fast. He knew Jessica. She never let anyone else
answer her calls.
“You're calling to figure out who | am?” Lawrence shot back, his voice sharp but playful.
Melvin, usually calm as a cucumber, let a spark of emotion slip through. He paused for a moment before asking,
“Where's Jessica? Get her on the phone.”
“She's in the shower,” Lawrence said, cool as a breeze.
After answering, he switched the phone to speaker mode so Jessica could listen in.

“Tell her to callback when she’s done. I'll be waiting,” Melvin said, cutting the conversation short before
hanging up.
Jessica had no plans to ring him back. She tossed her phone aside and let it be.
An hour later, fresh from her shower, Jessica sprawled across the bed. Worried Melvin might wait up all night, she
fired off a quick text. “I've said all | needed to say. There's nothing more to talk about.”
Message sent, she silenced her phone and drifted off to sleep.
Barely a moment after lying down, she peeked at her phone. Sure enough, Melvin was calling again.
Her brow furrowed. She thought it over and decided to let it ring.
