Chapter 890
Marguerite was genuinely surprised that Maurice had figured out it was Daphne in a heartbeat.
But then again, it made sense. Daphne had cto visit him earlier that day- she must have mentioned
Marguerite.
Wasn't Daphne the one who'd scolded her for leaving Maurice at the hospital alone?
She'd probably shared those scomplaints with Maurice, too.
So it didn't take a genius to realize that the person who'd clooking to make trouble for Marguerite was, of
course, Daphne.
Maurice immediately reached for his phone. "I'm calling her."
Marguerite quickly snatched the phone from his hand. "You're still sick-can't you just rest for once?"
Maurice looked up at her, his eyes searching. "Are you worried about me?"

Marguerite stiffened, frustration bubbling up inside her.
Maurice always had a knack for twisting her words. These days, she had to run everything through her mind
twice before saying it out loud, worried he'd misinterpret her.
She set his phone on the nightstand and tried to explain, "If you confront Daphne, did you ever think she'd just
cback to botheragain? Just focus on getting better-don't cause any more trouble."
With that, Marguerite stood up. "You seem to be recovering well, so I'm going home."
But Maurice caught her hand before she could leave. "Can't you stay witha little longer?"
His palm was ice-cold. The moment he touched her, goosebumps prickled up her
arms.
She gently pulled her hand free and clarified, "I promised Hayes I'd be hfor dinner tonight. He aced his
tests, and we're celebrating. Once | finish up swork, I'll cby to see you again."
Maurice paused, his brow furrowing as if turning something over in his mind. For a moment, a flicker of
sadness crossed his face, but hen et
quick replaced it with a small
smite. "Alright. Just be careful on
your way home."
Marguerite nodded and glanced at his phone again. "Perfect timing-Janie's already downstairs. If you don't trust
Laura to look after you, surely Janie will do?"
Maurice didn't answer, his expression darkening. Marguerite waited until Janie cinto the room, then quietly
slipped out.
Truth be told, the whole story about celebrating Hayes's test score was a lie. She just didn't want to spend
another minute in Maurice's hospital room.
Was she really being that heartless? After all, he had saved her life.
Yet no matter how she tried, Marguerite just couldn't bring herself to offer him any comfort.
By the tshe got back to the house, night had fully settled in.
As soon as she walked into her room, she found Miley glaring at her with a look of mock accusation, which made
her jump.
"Aren't you supposed to be in your own room? What are you doing in mine?"
Miley shoved a glass of milk into Marguerite's hand. "Honestly, | should hang a sign around your neck that says,
'Keep Maurice Away!" You never learn, do you? As punishment, you're not allowed to eat dinner tonight!"
Marguerite burst out laughing. "Letguess-Hayes and Manley put you up to this? The three of you are
ths thieves lately, and you're
getting more childish by the day."
She took a couple of sips of the milk, then dug out a soft leather bag and started packing her clothes.
A two-day study trip wouldn't need much-just a couple of shirts and a pair of jeans should do.
"So," Miley pressed, "why did you end up at the hospital again?"
Marguerite didn't even look up. "Maurice fell out of bed while Laura was looking after him."
Miley blinked, stunned for a moment, then declared with conviction, "He's faking it! That man's an actor, through
and through. | bet he staged the whole thing!"
